Types of Tools
This page is to gather thoughts on the types of tools that we want people to discover through the portal.
- Web Services - Tools that can be run from the portal. These are what the first version of the portal supported.
- Badges - Tools that can be placed in other environments.
- Web-based Tools - Tools that you can run off the web, but which don't work with the portal.
- Tool-like Services - These might be utility services that aren't really tools, but can be used. An example would be the Alchemy API (http://www.alchemyapi.com/)
- Downloadable Tools - Tools that don't work off the web, but which you can download. An example would be Pliny.
- Commercial Tools - Tools for which there is a web site, but which users have to pay to get access.
- PC based tools that you have to install. An example would be MonoConc?.
- Frameworks - Tool frameworks that you can do many things with. These are typically programming frameworks that take some technical knowledge to use.
- Code for Processes - Code for tools that can be run in an environment like R or Perl.
