Performing the QM-Goals

Process

  1. We need first establish the pedagogical problems this will solve. From there we can establish the objectives.
  2. We have to prioritize the problems
  3. Simultaneously develop a rough design

Pedagogical Objectives

Primary Objective To use the knowledge gained through our practical research and the audio visual products created to bring the work of the Queen's Men to life for students and scholars. By bringing to life we mean:

  • To show how the plays which are difficult to read are engaging once staged
  • To show how the plays were part of a dynamic political and theatrical culture
  • To give a sense of the company itself and its working practices
  • To explore how the work of the Queen's Men influenced Shakespeare and through him our own understanding of drama
  • To show how our own company and audiences responded to the plays today

Secondary (Incidental) Objectives

  • To help students imagine dramatic text as action on a stage
  • To give students insight into the process that turns text into performance
  • To introduce students to Elizabethan theatrical practice
  • To show how production choices interpret texts
  • To illuminate the problems confronting the theatrcial historian
  • To encourage students to approach dramatic text in a creative and imaginative spirit

Issues

  • We need a name for the project. Is "Performing the Queen's Men" good? Does it convey the pedagogical side?
  • How can we build it technically so that it works of a DVD-ROM as well as web?
    • Use Flash for interactive components
    • Avoid network calls to YouTube? or other things

The "timeline" Helen suggested was supposed to be some kind of navigation-and-information tool, and I still kind of like that idea -- so you'd click on "QM founded," for instance, and that takes you to a paragraph about how the company was created, who were its members, etc., with further links to potted biographies and brief histories of Leicester's Men etc.

Not sure how we could link the video content to that -- but perhaps we don't have to.
