April 11, 2008 Meeting
Weiguang has developed an interface where we can control the visualization. Now we need to experiment with different types of controls. The controls allow us to see 3-D
- Text Labels
- Orientation - to the user or radial
- Colour - choice of colour or colour shift
- Size
- Typeface - font - W will show me options
- Lines
- Distance from center (can we tie it to frequency)
- Order around (at the moment it is by frequency, but it could be alphabetical or by clusters)
- Colour, transparency, thickness
- Hit balls
- Colour, transparency, size
- Full text
- words or lines of words
- transparency, colour
- Angle of text
- Settings - can we save a favorite set of settings
Next steps
- We need to experiment with views and types of texts
- Speed - how to get it faster? The goal is to have the right speed of animation
- Preprocess to some extent
- Use parallel processing hardware - this should speed it up - the goal would be small scale - 8 nodes
- algorithm
- Can we get the full text to shift into view
- We need to experiment with number of words and length of lines
- We need to find ways to change shape of cylinder
- Can we bend the cylinder an amount for every instance
- How would we represent structure?
- How would we represent multiple texts?
- How do we handle structure?
- Should there be some idea of chapters where the collocation links don't cross boundaries?
- Can we bundle up a windows executable
Demonstration Image
One goal is to show this as an example of HPC. SHARCNET has a HPC-in-a-box with 8 processors for demo purposes. We should create a demo version that will:
- Users would see a list of popular youth books (like Frankenstein - get books from Gutenberg) It would be nice to have images for them
- Clicking a book would run the program using a saved setting.
- They would be encouraged to play with the resulting visualization
- They would be encouraged to change settings and run again
- They would be encouraged to choose another book or to find one on the net.
Could we get popular contemporary novels like Harry Potter? Or screen scripts?
The hook would be "Write my paper? Visualization of novels for understanding"
