Extract Dialogue from a Screenplay to Explore Linear Discourse
This exercise uses
this Recipe, the Text Extraction Tool, the List Words Tool and the Concordance Tool to extract and explore a character’s dialogue from a play to explore a character’s discourse in a linear fashion.
Exercise Steps
- Get a copy of Romeo and Juliet in XML format from a source such as John Bosak’s Site;
- Unzip the text and choose the Romeo and Juliet file which is labeled ‘r_and_j.xml;’
- Log in to TAPoR;
- Add the XML file to MyTexts;
- Extract dialogue from text using the TAPoR Extract Text;
- Fill in the dialog box in a way similar to the following:
- Run the TAPoR Find Words - Concordance Tool on the result;
- Consider the evolution or form of the discourse using TAPoR List Words Tool or the distribution of particular words using the TAPoR Pattern Distribution Tool
