Compare Texts to Verify Authorship

This exercises uses this Recipe and takes two works purported to come from the same author and uses tools such as Pattern Distribution and Word Lists to provide evidence of whether they may have been created by the same author.

Exercise Steps

1 This exercise uses two works by Edgar Allan Poe, The Cask of Amontillado and The Raven, both of which are freely available from: Electronic Text Center, University of Virginia Library;

  1. Log in to the TAPoR portal;
  2. Generate a word list (sorted by frequency) using the TAPoR List Words Tool for each of the texts and save the results to the Databench with unique names;
  3. The List Words results should resemble the following:
    poeCompare.gif

    As you can see the list are largely similar. This substantiates that the person who wrote each of the works is drawing upon a largely common vocabularly.

  4. Run the TAPoR Pattern Distribution Tool on each and save the results to the Databench;
Again, as you can see, the results are startlingly similar again, further supporting the conclusion that both works were authored by the same person;
