Archiving Road Map

We have targeted January 2008 as a milestone at which we can call the Globalisation Compendium 'complete' and thus start the process of archiving. This will principally involve Nancy, Lian, Geoffrey and Shawn. Additionally, we expect to engage with Nick Ruest at Mills Library, and with Jim Clark, Chief, Legal Deposit - Internet Unit at Library and Archives Canada to carry out the deposit process.(after repeated attempts to contact the Oxford Text Archive, we have not been able to receive any response)

These are the steps we will take to complete the process:

  1. Map of file structure of the deposit with comments (plain text)
  2. Text Map of the file structure of working directory with functional description (Shawn, Lian)
  3. Create Interactive PDF's of all (representative) screens (Shawn)
    1. User Experience Captured
    2. Editor Experience Captured
    3. Create JPGs of all screens using Paparazzi
    4. Create a series of linked PDF files
    5. Map hot links between screen hotspots to simulate User Interaction
    6. A text file that describes user experience with reference to JPEGs
  4. Export all Entries as XML files (Lian, Shawn) GlossaryEntries.zip XMLandPDF.zip
  5. Export the SQL database containing the Bibliographic data and Contributor data to a (tab delimited) textfile and to a SQL dumpfile (Lian)
    1. Text file of the Contributor Database
    2. Text file of the Bibliograhic Database
    3. SQL dumpfile of the complete database
  6. Plain text description of system environment with version numbers
  7. Print out all entries as PDFs to create a digital archive (Shawn)XMLandPDF.zip
  8. Print out all entries (and selected JPEGs) on paper to create a manuscript archive (Shawn)XMLandPDF.zip
  9. Create TAR ball of working directory and burn to DVDs (Lian)
  10. Compile all digital assets (sql, xml, pdfs and html-based description of interaction, TARBall) onto a DVDs (Shawn)
  11. Compile all non-digital assets into a archive-friendly form (a box) (Shawn)
  12. Contact and arrange for Deposits (Shawn, Nick, Jim Clark)
  13. Deposit assets at McMaster Mills Library, Globalization project and the National Library of Canada (Shawn)

Followup Experiment

We can imagine two followup experiments/consultations.

  1. Bring in consultant to check over this process.
  2. Developing a smartText model using the TiddlyWiki? model to see if we can archive interactive texts that capture some of the functionality.

Status

  1. talked with Jim Clark 28 Jan 2008. He shares the current Government of Canada Webarchive which an ongoing project and the product of two full webcrawls with a third currently in progress. Technical details.
  2. Details on the process for deposit with the Oxford Text Archive are available at their site. Although our subject matter may be outside of their normal realm of interest, this may still offer an opportunity - Shawn will explore this.
  3. Despite repeated attempts via email and web forms could not raise the OTA.
