2008 TADA Research Evaluation eXchange (T-REX)

TADA (Text Analysis Developers Alliance), OpenSky? Solutions, and TAPoR are sponsoring a contest for tools. This is the first such contest.

Note This is just the draft. The full and accurate competition is at TADA Research and Evaluation eXchange (T-REX) site.

A Draft Proposal

Introduction

TADA announces a new text analysis event: a multi-category "best ideas" type competition intended to stimulate innovation in text analysis and encourage connections between users and developers developers. For users, this is a chance to ask for a tool you always wish you had. The inaugural T-REX event will use the TAPoR Portal as a core platform, though tools and designs aren't limited to TAPoR.

Competition Categories

  • Best New Tool
An award for the best Web Service or REST text tool.
  • Best Idea for a New Tool
An award for the best idea for a new tool that can be implemented on the web as a Web Service or REST tool.
  • Best Interface Improvement Idea for the TAPoR Portal
An award for interface design or feature ideas for the TAPoR portal.
  • Best New Feature for a tool registered on the TAPoR Portal
An award for interface design or feature ideas for tools available through the TAPoR portal.

Competition Guidelines

  • Participants should submit entries by e-mail to trex@tapor.ca. You can submit more than one entry. Check here for submission details.?
  • Participants are expected to have a TAPoR account with a functioning email address to which we can respond.
  • Entries will be judged by a team including Geoffrey Rockwell, Stéfan Sinclair, and Stephen Downie. The judges reserve the right to award multiple prizes for each category or none at all.
  • In the case of Ideas for New Tools it is understood that the submitter authorizes TAPoR to implement the idea and that they will not expect any compensation other than appropriate acknowledgement.
  • By submitting it is understood that you give the TAPoR project a non-exclusive license to post the idea (with appropriate recognition) on this TADA site. It is also understood that if you are submitting an idea, bug report, or feature idea, that you give the TAPoR project a non-exclusive license to implement the idea or fix the bug.

Prizes

  • Winning entries will get small Canadian-themed prizes (think genuine maple syrup) and will be publically acknowledged both in announcements, documentation and any publications resulting. OpenSky? Solutions is our prize sponsor.

Timeline

  • Announcement April 15, 2008
  • Competition closes June 15, 2008
  • Announcements by July 15, 2008
  • Try to program the winners by Sept 15, 2008

Future

T-REX plans to develop a model of regular challenge categories that are decided upon by TADA members to replace the categories above. The idea is that we agree on a challenge and then compare our tool solutions.

Other

  • Should we have a Facebook page?
  • Do we want more judges.
  • We need to set up the trex@tapor.ca e-mail.
  • Where do we advertise? Who will write the advertisement.
  • Can we get a good web page?
  • Write DHQ about sponsoring

  • (comment from StefanSinclair - 07 Apr 2008 02:04:47): Do we need a separate page for submission guidelines if we already have the competition guidelines? If so, I'd shift some of the legalese stuff from the competition guidelines (on this page) to the submission guidelines page. We could probably just set up a form in this wiki for submissions.
